Proposed change to disaster appeals donation distribution

The NSW Government has recently released a very disturbing proposal that needs all our attention. The Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, Kevin Anderson, is considering a new condition for disaster appeals, which would place a timeframe for distributing donations received after an appeal has formally closed. The proposal is part of the NSW Government’s stated agenda in balancing charity obligations and increased donor expectations.

FIA is calling for NSW-based members and those who fundraise in NSW, to use the following letter template to oppose the condition concerning disaster appeals and also make a submission outlining the impact it will have on your charity. Members should have their CEO or Chair sign the letter. The deadline for submissions is 18 June 2021.

The NSW Government is also seeking feedback on their updated Charitable Fundraising Guidelines. These guidelines will improve standards and compliance measures for charities in NSW. FIA has suggested only minimal changes to these guidelines and commends the NSW Government on the updates.
