Arthur Venn Fundraiser of the Year 2016
What does it mean to you to be the winner of the 2016 Arthur Venn Fundraiser of the Year Award?
Arthur Venn was an extraordinary fundraiser and, through his work both in mentoring others and in establishing what is now the FIA, he has left a lasting legacy to the sector. It means so much to be honoured with an award in his name. I was particularly proud to be named a joint-winner with alongside Peter Dalton, a man who has offered so much to the not-for-profit sector.
How has winning this award impacted on your fundraising career, or how do you think it will in the future?
I don’t believe anyone works in this sector for recognition. There’s no greater reward than seeing your hard work translate into real outcomes for the causes you care about; this is what keeps me passionate. But awards like this one are certainly beneficial in enabling my work. The award has helped me to build new connections with others in the sector, particularly those overseas. The endorsement by the FIA also plays a role in helping me to build trust with other stakeholders outside of the fundraising industry.
Would you encourage people to nominate someone for an award? Why?
I would certainly encourage others to apply. Regardless of whether or not you win, the application process is a very useful. I found it a wonderful opportunity to reflect on my career, and consider both the quantum of my work to date, and what I hope to achieve in the future.
