CEO Update

As I write this today, there are only two more sleeps until FIA Conference 2020 kicks off at 3.30pm on Wednesday at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre!

With the conference theme of it starts with you, our objective is to recognise the critical role fundraisers play in bringing donors and causes into alignment and changing the world for the better. We’ve worked hard to bring you international and local experts to share the latest developments and fundraising practice perspectives, and I hope you will be able to apply their teachings to your own practice. And through networking with your peers, the conference will be an even richer experience for you.

I’m glad that so many of you are attending. Our registrations stand at over 700, which is terrific!

Working through the numbers last week for the FIA Awards for Excellence in Fundraising and the Fundraisers’ Gala Dinner, we found we couldn’t fit everyone who wanted to attend into the room we had reserved. About 10 days out, we had nearly 500 registrations for the dinner and a waitlist of more than 30 people. There are worse problems to have…

Fortunately, the convention centre’s ballroom is available on the night, so we’ve moved the gala dinner to the bigger space and are happy to report we will now be able to accommodate everyone who wants to attend. So, if you felt you had missed out, you can still register to join what will be an incredible night.

The national awards presented at the gala dinner are a celebration of the incredible work and impact of fundraising by FIA members. All awards judges are chosen for their expertise as well as their reputation; transparent and best practice guidelines are followed, including judges recusing themselves from any categories in which they or their organisation have been involved in any way. Furthermore, FIA introduced an audit system for 2020, where a committee of senior fundraising leaders examined a selection of award entries to ensure the claims were valid and the judging was fair.

We feel this approach is necessary to ensure we reward only the best fundraising work in the fairest way. This new process worked well and we will continue to do this for the awards in future.

I sincerely hope you enjoy this year’s conference and awards night, and I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during our two and a half days together in Brisbane.
