CEO Update

In mid-August I had a very productive meeting with Commonwealth Assistant Minister for Charities, Zed Seselja. We discussed the timetable for fundraising reform and I found him very engaged. He really ‘gets’ the red tape issues that FIA members have been concerned about for so long. Next step is for FIA to organise a couple of meetings with his officials and a representative group of fundraisers in coming weeks to test ideas for reform.

On Wednesday, I met with officials at the Fair Work Ombudsman to discuss the findings of the Charity Collection Inquiry. This inquiry examined the use of labour by charities to solicit donations in a three-month period in 2017. The FWO audited 15 charities, including several FIA members, to see if their supply chain arrangements met obligations under Commonwealth workplace laws.

I was happy to learn that the FWO has determined that, in this instance, there is no evidence of any contraventions or poor practice by our members. But members must remain vigilant and always adhere to best practice in supply chain arrangements.

There are extensive resources available at www.fairwork.gov.au to help charities understand and comply with workplace laws. FIA has also published a Practice Note: Fundraising Supply Chain Governance which reminds members to meet the requirements of all applicable laws and regulations, including workplace laws, and to ensure all relevant parties in a fundraising supply chain are aware of the member’s obligations under the FIA Code.

You will also find two member-only template resources in our membership portal including an example fundraising supplier conduct policy and fundraising responsibility standards.
